22.07.2010 | MADRID (ESP)
Just hours before the start of the two-day Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour 2010 classic in Madrid, extreme temperatures in the Spanish capital are taking their toll on man and machine. With the mercury climbing to 45 degrees Celsius in the famous Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas bullfighting arena, the best FMX riders in the world and their mechanics are spending as much time as possible in the shade or chilling out in the pool as the clock ticks down to the event.

The riders of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour are no strangers to searing temperatures and dry winds – after all, both the Texas (USA) stop in 2009 and the third stop of 2010 season just a few weeks ago on Moscow’s Red Square (RUS) turned into battles of endurance as temperatures climbed and climbed – yet the best freestyle motocross athletes in the world have never been faced with conditions quite like those expected for the two-day classic in Madrid on 22/23 July. As temperatures pushed the 40-degree mark on Wednesday in the Arena, riders and mechanics did their best to stay in the cool shade of the bullfighting arena’s tunnels or stayed in the hotel to chill out in preparation for their few minutes of total concentration out on the baking track.
If the weather report is to be believed, the Red Bull X-Fighters had better prepare themselves for the hottest event ever in the Spanish capital – temperatures are forecast to touch 40 degrees Celsius in the arena on Thursday and Friday.
